How Much To Spend On A Birthday Gift

My kids just got invited to a birthday party for a little boy that they know a little bit from pre-school. I wouldn’t say that they are really “friends” they are more pre-school buddies. Their pre-school class is very small. It’s only 4-5 kids so it’s a very small class.

My kids are both girls and they are into the stage where they want “girls only” events and they don’t want to play with boys.

They like this little boy, but I feel that the party invitation is only because the pre-school class is so small.

Don’t get me wrong - I’m thankful for the invite. My question is what is the right amount to spend on a birthday gift for a child these days?! Especially a child who isn’t really a friend, but more of an acquaintance…

My first instinct is $20. My problem is that I have no idea how that measures up to other people’s ideas of how much to spend.

My kids have received gifts anywhere from $10 all the way up to $40 from friends at their parties. I would say that I tend to spend between $20 and $30 per gift, depending on how close of a friend they are.

It can definitely start to get expensive when you get invited to so many parties…and buying a bunch of gifts for kids that you don’t really even know can be a hit to the budget.

I’m still unsure what I will get for this little boy from pre-school - and I’m equally unsure how much I should spend on the gift!

What do you think? What is the right amount to spend on a child’s birthday gift these days?
