It's hard to know which of the many social bookmarking sites to focus upon, and that's what I want to help you guys with. After years in the industry, here are my top ten social bookmarking sites. The results are not scientific, but rather are based on what I've seen is most effective in terms of traffic and more specifically, in terms of traffic conversion.
1. Twitter
While not considered strictly a social bookmarking site, it definitely does the works. If you treat your Twitter followers well (RT's, replies, Follow Friday's...), you can build up a great community of people willing to read and share almost any quality link you post or they read on your site.

2. Digg
As far as social bookmarking sites go, Digg can arguably send you the most traffic, specially if you have the good luck (and do the good work) to appear on the home page. Specially indicated for bloggers and other producers of great content.
3. StumbleUpon
StumbleUpon may not drive as much regular traffic as Digg, but it is used by all kinds of people and works with really diverse work. Try it out for your niche: it may be a flop or a complete success.

4. Reddit
I don't know why, but my experience with Reddit is that it works really well for trivia, pics, videos... In short, more of a site for browsers (uhm, that is people who browse, not Mozilla Firefox). I would use it for less in-depth, fun articles; although as I say, that's my experience - maybe someone else's is completely different.

5. Delicious
The social bookmarking site formerly known as del.icio.us boasts a young and techy audience. Keep that in mind when trying to promote your work. Delicious may not be the place to talk about needlework or fake teeth...
6. Yahoo! Buzz
Just as with Twitter, taking care of the community is paramount here. But again, with the right work, you can create lots of traffic that converts specially well. Participate in Buzz activity and build up a large network by participating as much as you can. Time spent on Yahoo! Buzz will be rewarded.
7. Friendfeed
Friendfeed, a Google product, allows you to build a customised feed of made up of content your friends on other collaborative sites have shared. This site is great because it really helps to track the social media activity of a targeted group and if correctly studied, it can lead you to understand how the customers you are interested in operate and therefore make good decisions.
8. Clipmarks
The Clipmark plugin allows users to make selections of their favorite parts on your webpage and share them, so then other members can vote for their favorite. This website definitely works better with videos, pics or lighter news. In-depth analysis and less catchy headlines are discouraged.

9. Newsvine
Contrary to Clipmarks, I find that Newsvine is a great place to write in-depth, expert articles on any given subject. The Newsvine community is patient and thoughtful, and appreciates these kinds of posts, so if you have good and informative content to share, this is a place to take specially into account.
10. Slashdot
A great site but with a more limited audience which is very focused on techy information. Made up of self-proclaimed nerds and Linux-lovers, be sure not to try and sell Microsoft's latest operating system here.
So... Why didn't I include Facebook or MySpace if I did include Twitter? I know it's just a technicality, but I ruled out sites that impose important restrictions on followers. Twitter has the chance of adding a restriction, but it's barely used so I included it. Defining social bookmarking sites isn't that easy, but be sure to use as many as possible when promoting your site.
