Wrong Side Of The Bed
Today I absolutely, without question woke up on the wrong side of the bed. Almost everything seemed to push a button that would set me off on a rabbit trail of frustration.
It felt like I should just go back to bed so that I didn’t have to be around anyone.
Unfortunately, most of us don’t have the luxury of staying home behind closed doors all day long. I know I sure don’t.
So my strategy to cope on a day like today is this:
Get some serious exercise. There is something about exercise that helps to release some of that frustration. I can take out all my negative emotions on the pavement (or the weights, or whatever other form of exercise is on the agenda).
Take a deep breath. It sounds like something you would tell an upset 5 year old, but learning how to breath through frustration/negative emotion is a proven technique that is taught by mental health professionals. Whether you call it tactical breathing, calming breathing, or just taking a deep breath, it can be super helpful.
Be thankful. I always cringe when I read stuff like this. It sounds so patronizing. But I know there is a reason why so many articles talk about being thankful. It does something to us - it can completely change your perspective when you focus on the good instead of the bad. I know, I know, it’s the last thing anyone feels like when they’re frustrated! Do it anyway!
And last by not least, go to bed early. Chances are when I’m in a mood, I’m probably overtired, and a little extra sleep never hurt anyone. Plus some extra beauty sleep is a great side benefit!
So hopefully today I can get some exercise, breathe out the bad, be thankful, and get some good rest, and then I will wake up on the right side of the bed tomorrow!
