I'm starting to think time passes
differently for me than everyone else.
People talk about weeks like they're
nothing, paint days in the colours
I reserve for seconds. They go through
four years of school without blinking,
but children learn entire languages in
that time. Four years can outlast
presidents, four years can forget the
laugh of someone you thought you'd
love forever. Four years ago I was a
child. Four years ago I had the privilege
of acting reckless and believing I could
be that way forever. Four years ago I
wasted opportunities because I didn't
know that they would expire like ice
cream pushed to the back of the freezer,
like a coupon with really fine print.
Four years feel like a lifetime to
me. If I go a week without talking
to someone they feel like a distant
relic of my past; I begin to think
of them like museum exhibits, like
ticket stubs, like old photos. I don't get
how some people think talking every
day means being overattached. I think
time passes differently for me than
everyone else. Either that, or everyone
else has terribly missed the point
of being alive.
