Key points from the video:
- 2014 study from the Journal of Positive Psychology.
- Tracked people for a full year and compared those who pursued:
- Hedonistic behaviors to increase pleasure they felt (self-seeking behaviors to improve sense of happiness)
VS
- Those who pursued more meaningful behaviors such as contributing value to the world, giving to people around them.
- After 1 year of tracking them they found that those who actively tried to be more happy through pleasure seeking activities had the highest levels of depression.
- While those with a higher percentage of meaningful behaviors had lower levels of depression.
- The irony is interesting.
- If we seek happiness we end up with more depression.
- If we ignore happiness and do something with meaning happiness comes.
Analogy I like to use is chasing the butterfly.
- Summary: Big research finding: The pursuit of meaning, not happiness, is what improves well being. - BIG FINDING OF RESEARCH.
These 2 things are similar but not the same.
Realizing the meaning behind the work you do makes you happy.
Compared to deliberately trying to seek happiness through self-absorbed behaviors don't result in happiness because they don't have meaning.
Viktor Frankl, author of Man's Search for Meaning- Happiness is must come as a results of a meaningful behavior.
"Happiness cannot be pursued; it must ensue, and it only does so as the unintended side effect of one's personal dedication to a cause greater than oneself or as the by-product of one's surrender to a person other than oneself. Happiness must happen, and the same holds for success: you have to let it happen by not caring about it. I want you to listen to what your conscience commands you to do and go on to carry it out to the best of your knowledge. Then you will live to see that in the long-run—in the long-run, I say!—success will follow you precisely because you had forgotten to think about it"
"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life—daily and hourly. Our answer must consist, not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual."
