THE SECRETARY of state for business and trade, Jonathan Reynolds, has announced plans to visit India in February to work on finalising the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations.
Speaking at the India Global Forum’s (IGF) annual UK-India Parliamentary Lunch at the House of Lords in London, Reynolds emphasised the importance of strengthening the bilateral partnership.
The minister highlighted that the UK-India trading relationship was valued at GBP 41 billion for the year ending September 2024. He also reaffirmed the British government’s commitment to boosting trade ties between the two economies, with India being the fifth largest and the UK the sixth largest globally.
“I want to reaffirm the UK's commitment to deliver growth for both countries through the trade deal that we're talking about, through the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and the Technology Security Initiative,” said Reynolds. He added, “I’ve just been finalising my own visit to India next month to make sure we proceed on that basis.”
The visit follows prime minister Keir Starmer’s announcement of plans to relaunch the FTA negotiations in early 2025, which had been delayed due to general elections in both countries.
