There are wars that I would have to shirk as evil creeds,
Politically contrived by power’s ungodly, wicked deeds,
Slaughtering one’s fellow man is nothing new to some
Extremists of dehumanizing followers of scum.
Of course, throughout history, man has never ever changed,
Dictators come and go, each one evil, each deranged,
With one nightmarish sickness, controlling every gene,
Greed, that idol of hypocrisy, worshiped to extreme.
However, some wars are essential, morally and just,
To save a world from evil men, rape, and holocaust.
Conscientiously objecting to such, is nothing less than vile,
Expressing a salute with that nauseating “heil.”
Some look upon Remembrance Days of World Wars One and Two,
Without a single thought of what they meant for me and you.
Those were human lives that volunteered their very souls,
So we could live in luxury, as in a goldfish bowl.
So let’s not fool ourselves and think those bloodied Prussian boots
Wouldn’t even now, be crushing down on trusting dupes,
Slaves like all those others who were tortured, ‘till a shot
Silenced every prayer the poor souls tried in vain to stop.
Yes, we’d even now be slaves without those volunteers,
Those who know neglect and sorrow, often shedding tears,
Some feel so empty, deep inside, a shot would only heal
The agony of memories that many of them feel.
Our veterans gave their very blood and shattered bone for us,
Broken bodies that had forfeited their livings lives of lust,
Leaving minds that can’t repress the ugly slaughter of their friends,
In nightmare, after nightmare, until the very end.
Most all have now departed, they left with little fame,
In fact, they left in so much secrecy, I never caught their name,
John Doe is what they sometimes got, and sometimes a “Hey you!”
The war is now forgotten. So, “Who the heck are you?”
When next Remembrance Day arrives, at least give it the time
To recognize some feelings, for those we held sublime.
And read the lines etched on their face to watch the war unfold,
Then thank our God that you were spared the stories you’ve been told.
