The chair is a key part of office furniture, and as we spend a great deal of time sitting at our desks it is vital that we are comfortable with it. There are so many different types of office chairs that the choice is mind-boggling; however, there is an important question to ask when considering the purchase of chairs for the office - who are they for?
Not every chair is for the manager in his office, nor for the secretary at her keyboard, and what about the receptionist's needs, and those of visitors to the premises? All of these people need different types of chairs, and all need the one thing a good chair provides: comfort.
That last point may seem like common sense - for it is - but in the quest for a good-looking and stylish office, it is often overlooked. What, after all, is the point of having exciting and beautiful office furniture if it is uncomfortable and difficult to use?
Looking at the chair for the desk-bound manager first, the leather swivel type tends to be the most frequently chosen. This is for good reason, too, as these executive-style chairs come adjustable for height and with dull armrests, and when finished in black leather with chrome trimmings look the part, too. After all, you want the office to look good when clients visit, and what better than a well-furnished office to put an image across?
While talking of clients it is important that they are catered for, too; they may have a wait in reception, and there are many designs of chairs that will be adequate for keeping the client comfortable during that short time. In addition, the board room or meeting room needs to be matched with equally comfortable and stylish office chairs, for these areas are the ones the client will be introduced to most frequently.
Comfort is as good a selling point as style, and the two together make a formidable partnership. In terms of office furniture it is fair to say the chair is the one piece that may be most varied; the typist, for instance, wants one in which correct posture can be maintained for long periods, and the receptionist needs one that is movable and easy to get in and out of. All of these needs can be found in a range of chairs with castors on and swivel backs, those that are designed exactly for the purpose.
There is one area we are forgetting, however, and that is the lounge: every office has a resting area where staff and clients are encouraged to take a break, have a coffee, or simply relax for five minutes, and this needs to be furnished with soft, comfortable chairs in which the individual feels relaxed.
The choice of chairs, and the varied designs and styles, available means any office - large or small - can be designed to look good and be comfortable to work in, and for that, we should all be thankful.
