How do bi-metallic lugs prevent galvanic corrosion?
BI METAL LUGS are the products which among others protect interconnected dissimilar metals from galvanic corrosion. This can happen, for example, when one connects copper and aluminium, galvanic corrosion being a common negative issue in such cases. This process occurs when the two metals have different electrochemical potentials and are in direct contact with each other in a moist or electrolytic environment. In such a situation, the aluminium get its surface corroded and eventually the electrical resistance increases, thus the connection becomes overheated and may even fail.
The manufacture of bi-metallic lugs eliminates this problem by incorporating a permanent metallurgy bond between an aluminium and a copper part. The aluminium part is connected to the aluminium conductor, and the copper part is connected to copper busbars or terminals. Thus, the metals never come into direct contact, and the conditions for the occurrence of galvanic corrosion are perfectly eliminated.
Besides this, the copper palm of high-quality BI METAL LUGS is often tin-plated, while the aluminium barrel is coated with protective materials sometimes. All these treatments are for the purpose of preventing oxidation, moisture ingress, environmental degradation and thus, showering the connection with durability and reliability.
If one applies proper crimping techniques and complies with the installation standards, BI METAL LUGS even under thermal cycling and vibrations will maintain mechanical strength and consistent conductivity. PIONEER POWER INTERNATIONAL is one of the manufacturers who produce lugs that comply with international standards, thereby assuring long-lasting, safe, and corrosion-free connections in electrical systems of industrial as well as commercial categories.
