FAMILY – The Love of a Child

Yesterday my brother called, looking for advice on how to help his toddler first born cope now that her sister has arrived into this world. Just as most first born babies experience, his little girl is having a tough time adjusting to not having Dad’s undivided attention. His call reminded me of the times I had the same challenges with my own first born.
I recall that little boy with the cornflower blue eyes, the only one I said “I love you more than anyone in this world” to at least a dozen times a day, right up until he shared that space with his newborn sister. And once she was born, how I tried to impart to him that although he was no longer my only child that he would always be my first. The one who cracked my heart so wide open I thought I would burst with joy and my first true understanding of unconditional love. All I could do was take him into my arms, hoping he would understand that there was room enough for both of them in that space he had created, deep inside my heart.
I look at my son 19 years later, and I still see that little boy with the cornflower blue eyes. My beloved son. My first child.
