Handyman vs. Contractor. Who to use?

Hire a handyman or a licensed contractor? There are pros and cons to each. Handymen will be less expensive the majority of the time, but liability can be greater. Legally, in California, unlicensed tradespeople can not do home improvement repairs over $500, labor and material.
