We never imagined finding ourselves in such a heartbreaking situation, and it is with heavy hearts that we reach out to you now. What was supposed to be a joyful chapter in our lives — moving into our new home built by DR Horton — has turned into an unimaginable nightmare. Help Leslie and Mike Reclaim Health And Make Their Home Safe.
We closed on our home on March 21st, filled with hope and excitement. However, due to negligent and faulty workmanship by DR Horton, our new home was contaminated with toxic respirable construction dust, silica dust, and fiberglass fragments. Helping Leslie and Mike Reclaim Health and Restore Safety in Their Home.
What we were initially told was “normal” new-home dust has been confirmed by several experts to be extremely dangerous. Our insurance will not cover this contamination, deeming it a construction defect. DR Horton is self-insured, making it nearly impossible to fix, remedy, or acknowledge any wrongdoing.
This exposure has taken a serious toll on us physically, emotionally, mentally, and financially. Leslie, a lung cancer survivor, has been particularly impacted, now facing a diagnosis of reactive airway disease. We have been forced out of our home due to the dangerous conditions, and the ongoing health risks have caused immense anxiety and PTSD.
We’ve exhausted our savings on expert consultations, months of hotels, and attempts to clean and remediate the damage. All efforts to seek help from DR Horton have been met with dismissiveness. The estimated cost ($85,000) to make the home safe is far beyond our means after everything we’ve already endured. Reclaiming Health and Safety: Leslie and Mike’s Home Makeover.
Now, our most urgent need is finding a temporary healthy place to live where we can start over, heal, and rebuild our lives. We continue to pay a mortgage on a home we cannot safely live in, and our financial resources are depleted.
We need a safe and healthy environment where we can focus on recovery and regain our peace of mind — essentially starting from ground zero when we thought we had so much to look forward to.
We are devastated to ask for help, but we cannot do this alone. Any contribution you can make will primarily help us secure a temporary healthy living situation. Once we can accomplish that, your help will go towards hopefully making our house safe and livable.
We can’t stress enough that this is our home. We don’t have multiple homes. This is it. We have had so many people offer incredibly superficial and seemingly easy advice, but I assure you none of this has a simple, quick solution. We have been drowning. This has not been an easy situation by any stretch.
If you are unable to contribute, please share our story to raise awareness and prevent others from facing similar situations.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your kindness and generosity during this incredibly difficult time.
With love and gratitude,
Leslie and Mike
