What Quran Says About How to Communicate?
“Call to the way of your Lord with wisdom and fair admonition”.
Islam is a complete code of life, it helps us a lot in every sphere of life.In this blog we will give Quranic view point about how to communicate effectively. The methods of communicating a message is just as important as the content of the communication. The communicator must calculate the most effective manner and style to employ. The Quran is a complete guide in all these matters, for the prophet changed his methods according to the circumstances and characters of people he met.
Now we will discuss the quranic view point about essentials of effective communication one by one.
1. Importance of listening:
“Those who listen well to what is said and follow the best of it, they are the ones whom Allah has guided, they are the people of intelligence”.
2. Assessing the listener’s attitude and sincerity:
In Quran Allah tells us that prophet Sulayman (as) used to observe the person’s reaction and then present the next topic accordingly. When sending a letter to the Queen of Sheba via Hudhud, a member of his army, he gave this command:
“Take this letter of mine, deliver it to them, and then withdraw for a little and see how they respond.” (Surah An-Nahl:28).
The communicator must frequently make assessment of the listener’s reaction to what they are being told. Sometimes it will be necessary to alter the conversation’s content , style and intensity according to the person’s ability to understand.
3. Asking the listeners for their opinion:
When we look at the prophets’ and the messengers’ methods we see that they questioned those who listening to them. For example Hazrat Shu’ayb (as) asked:
“O people , what do you think?” (Surah Hud :88)
Hazrat Ibrahim (as) followed this same technique:
“Recite to them the story of Ibrahim (as), when he asked his father: “What do you worship?”. They replied: “We worship idols and we will continue to cling to them.” He asked: “Do they hear you when you call, or do they help you or do you harm?”. They said “No,but this is what we found our fathers doing.” (Surah AS-Shu’ara:69-74
4. Waiting for a listeners first reaction and choosing the appropriate method:
To know what the listeners already know about the topic and to avoid giving useless information , the Quran describes a delicate technique.
“The magician came to pharaoh and asked: “Will we receive a reward if we are the winners?” He said: “Yes, and you will be among those brought near”. They asked: ” Will you throw first or shall we be the one to throw?” He said: “You throw “. And when they threw, they cast a spell on people’s eyes and caused them to feel great fear of them. They produced an extremely powerful magic. We revealed to Musa: “Throw down your staff “. and it immediately swallowed up what they had forged. So the truth take place.”
Hazrat Musa (as) applied this efficient technique by telling Pharaoh’s magicians to throw first. This is also a method that can be employed by anyone who follows in the footsteps of messengers.
5. Not using force or pressure:
“If your Lord had willed, all people on earth would have had faith. Do you think you can force people to believe”.
Refraining from the use of pressure and allowing listeners to believe what they want will show that the preachers and trustworthy are not pursuing their own advantage.
The Communicators Qualities
1. Patience:
“So be steadfast. Allah’s promise is true. Do not let those who have no certainity make you impatient and shake your firmness.” (Surah Ar-Run:60)
2. Art of speaking wisely:
Allah says of David (as):
“We made his kingdom strong and gave him wisdom and decisive speech” (Surah Sad:20)
3. Strength , nobility and modesty:
” Do not give up and do not be downhearted. You shall be uppermost if you are believers”.(Surah Al-Imran: 139)
