Atrocities, Racism & Inequality

Shouldn’t men and women have equal opportunity in the work place with regards to wages, conditions and advancement?

0/240

People should never be discriminated against for sex, religous or cultural reasons as long as their beliefs cause no harm to others. Tolerance, respect and equal opportunity in the work place is something everyone should be able to enjoy.

Wise words Colin! Peace!

Forgiveness is the only route worth taking, although it can be an extremely difficult route to take. But I came to the conclusion - the only person being hurt was me. Me hating someone else doesn't make that person hurt, only myself.

Interesting viewpoint Colin V if you have been discriminated against. If you speak through forgiveness and letting it go then I tip my hat to you.

Yes as long as it works both ways for both genders in both workplaces. Men should have equal opportunities in female dominated jobs as much as women should have the same opportunities in male dominant jobs.

Moses Jackson, I have been discriminated against, and I still hold my viewpoint, so I have to disagree with you.

There is only over reaction if you are not the person being discriminated against!

Jane, you are absolutely correct. Because of this controversy, there is so much over-reaction to the gender-equality in the workplace. Bottom line is like Reg said - equal pay for equal work. No need to overthink this.

Totally agree Reg

I believe that equal work should receive equal pay, and advancement too. I do have a problem with getting equal pay and advancement when the job standard cannot be met.

I think equal pay for equal work as well; however, I think some careers/employers are giving the job to the wrong candidate just so they won't be blamed for gender discrimination.

DATE: [ "2018-04-08T04:35:14.000000Z", "YYYY-MM-DD HH:mm:ss" ]

Interesting. I see merit in both points of view and wholeheartedly agree discrimination of any kind should never be tolerated.

There is more to high performers than effort. Some are more talented/skilled and thus more valuable employees than others. Effort is always appreciated. If someone on Mat leave is a better performer than another, they will be rewarded.

Completely agree - discrimination is wrong and should never happen. But who is the better performer? The one that puts the job as first priority, and uses their skills and time to rise to the top. Not the one who chooses other priorities.

DATE: [ "2018-04-08T00:48:17.000000Z", "YYYY-MM-DD HH:mm:ss" ]

Discrimination of any kind in employment is just wrong and remedy through litigation or otherwise should be sought when you have been discriminated against for any reason.

Who is the better performer? Who has the better talent/skills? Those people will advance in my Co. as they add value. In the private enterprise world the cream rises to the top. Not so much in many public service, Government jobs.

If a man or woman chooses to stay at home with the kids, then why should they be considered for advancement while they aren't working for 6-12 months? That is ludicrous to me. People choosing to prioritize the work they are doing deserve it

DATE: [ "2018-04-07T23:02:26.000000Z", "YYYY-MM-DD HH:mm:ss" ]

I didn't say anything about a woman specifically - the man can easily stay at home with the kids and the woman stays working if that is what the family decides. It's all about what you prioritize.

DATE: [ "2018-04-07T23:00:55.000000Z", "YYYY-MM-DD HH:mm:ss" ]

So if I understand correctly what you are saying is a woman should be discriminated against for advancement if she chooses to have a family...Hmm. Gonna have to disagree. How about those with the best skillset and work ethic advance!

DATE: [ "2018-04-07T22:01:22.000000Z", "YYYY-MM-DD HH:mm:ss" ]

For example, if you want to have a family, then you are putting kids in front of workplace - this is a great thing! But no one should expect to advance at work if they have other priorities.. the people with work as priority should advance.

DATE: [ "2018-04-07T17:41:28.000000Z", "YYYY-MM-DD HH:mm:ss" ]

Of course, men and women should have equal opportunity in the work place. That being said, everyone (both men and women) have choices to make. you can't have it all - you have to figure out your priorities.

DATE: [ "2018-04-07T17:39:13.000000Z", "YYYY-MM-DD HH:mm:ss" ]

To me it is ludicrous to discriminate based on gender for wages, conditions and potential for advancement in this day and age but I know it still occurs.

DATE: [ "2018-04-07T03:59:41.000000Z", "YYYY-MM-DD HH:mm:ss" ]

Absolutely. Gender should not be a discriminating factor in the workplace, especially when qualifications are equal

If they are doing the same job and treated the same way then why wouldn't the pay be equal for both men and women

DATE: [ "2018-03-13T20:11:04.000000Z", "YYYY-MM-DD HH:mm:ss" ]

Agreed. Equal pay for equal work

Of course equal pay for equal responsibility or work performed!
