ABUSE

I remember the day I got my first job. The potential to earn some money working in a fairly decent establishment was very appealing to my 17-year-old self. The only identifiable drawback was that the boss was a jerk. He could have been the poster child for workplace bullying and sexual harassment. As a friend to his daughter, I'd been around the restaurant and witnessed his deplorable treatment of the girls in his employ. So when his wife hired me a few years later to serve in their restaurant, I tied on my apron and braced myself, confident that all the maturity I had gained since middle school was going to be my armour.
That didn't last long. By the time his wife was left to the task of firing me, I didn't know if I should seek counselling or justice. In today's employment climate, I'd like to think he'd never get away with his abusive behavior. Unfortunately, the truth is that many employees are still being terrorized by employers just like him.
I don't know what ever became of him, but I hope that someone, at some stage, put him in his place. I just wish it had been me.
