Hiring A Babysitter
For parents of young children, a reliable babysitter is worth their weight in gold. Finding that perfect balance of trust, engagement, and affordability can be a journey, but it is one that pays off!
We were fortunate enough to have a university student who was studying to become a kindergarten teacher awhile back. Her passion for early childhood education was evident every time she watched our kids. They absolutely loved her, and although she has since moved away to begin her teaching career, they still talk about how much fun they had with her.
As our children grew, so did their older cousins, who have now stepped into the role of sitters. This family dynamic is special for everyone involved: the kids get to bond with their older relatives, and our nieces get valuable experience (and a bit of pocket money) in a supportive, low-pressure environment.
Of course, hiring help can be costly. With local rates averaging around $15 per hour, a simple two-hour movie date can easily climb toward $100 once you factor in tickets, snacks, and the sitter. We are incredibly lucky to have my parents nearby; their willingness to step in for childcare makes our occasional nights out much more sustainable.
Some of my friends around town do not have family support and have had to find different solutions. Many of my friends use apps to find vetted sitters, while others have found success by asking for recommendations from neighbors with teenagers. Another great strategy is "sitter swapping"—exchanging childcare services with a trusted friend for free, which builds community while saving money.
Whether you rely on family, apps, or neighborhood teens, the goal remains the same: finding someone who makes your children feel safe and happy while you take a well-deserved break.
