Soccer Season

It’s officially soccer season around here where I live. We are in the midst of my oldest daughter’s first soccer season and it is so fun to watch. Soccer also provides us with so many important lessons to learn.

When I was young I played soccer for many years and loved it. It’s such a great way to get exercise while having fun. The best part for me now is that my daughter and I have been heading to the fields a few evenings a week to get some extra practise.

It’s giving me a chance to play and get some exercise too and we are making memories together doing something that we both love.

There are many good things about soccer - it’s a team sport which encourages us to work together with our teammates towards a common goal. We win together and we lose together. We encourage each other and support each other, even when the game doesn’t go how we planned.

It’s healthy to learn how to lose graciously as well. That is a difficult skill to learn - no one likes to lose, but we all have instances where things do not turn out how we wanted them to.

Soccer (for kids) also helps with motor skill development. Running and dribbling the ball are difficult skills that require practise. These skills help with coordination, speed, and confidence.

It’s so good for kids to have a coach that they learn from and respect. A good coach becomes another authority figure in a child’s life - someone who they take instruction from. They might not like what the coach says, but it’s still important to follow the directions that are given.

There are so many more benefits of a game like soccer, but this is a pretty compelling list already. Soccer is also fairly affordable in the grand scheme of things, making it accessible for most people!

Quote of the day

“I am not a perfectionist, but I like to feel that things are done well. More important than that, I feel an endless need to learn, to improve, to evolve, not only to please the coach and the fans, but also to feel satisfied with myself. It is my conviction that here are no limits to learning, and that it can never stop, no matter what our age.” ― Cristiano Ronaldo
